Several months ago, Brandy Cherven arrived at a rescue facility in East Asia, crowded with barking beagles. Activists had saved the dogs from a research lab, and Cherven’s mission was to give them fresh starts.
During the visit, another dog caught her eye. A small, fluffy Malamute limped around the facility, his head permanently cocked to one side.
The woman running the facility told Cherven that she’d saved the pup from a slaughter truck.
“My heart just sank,” Cherven, cofounder of Run 2 The Rescue, told The Dodo. “I said, ‘We want to take that dog, too.’”
At Run 2 The Rescue, Kronk received a much-needed bath and a safe space to roam. Though he had a pronounced limp, he seemed happy moving around.
Cherven believes Kronk’s traumatic past in the dog meat trade included a significant head injury that stunted his growth.
“He looks like he has a form of dwarfism,” Cherven said. “But the vet said that, fortunately, they don’t think there’s any pain. This is just how he developed after having the head injury.”
“He’s got just such a goofy, silly personality,” Cherven said.
She decided Kronk needed a permanent home and some dedicated therapy, so she adopted him. Today, he lives in a loving Ohio home with Cherven and several rescue siblings.
